Early Life and Education
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who later became Pope Francis, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936. As a young man, he was inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi and felt a calling to serve the poor and marginalized.
A New Era for the Catholic Church
In 2013, Bergoglio was elected as the Bishop of Rome and took the name Pope Francis. His election marked a significant departure from previous papacies, as he became the first Jesuit pope and the first pope from Latin America.
